What inspired you to read the book?
In jail, you get the opportunity to meet interesting people. Rob sat with me when the housing officer called “Krilich you got a book.” He stared at the light pink cover and told me that was the same same wall paper he had in his home growing up. He explained to me briefly that Lee had been his housekeeper, and that this was the first book his sister had written. I had never met a writer, or a sibling of a writer for that matter, so I asked if I could read the book when he was done.
What you learned from reading the book?
I had met Rob for a couple months, we talked almost daily about our cases, traveling or plans after our release. I knew the Krilichs were a wealthy and powerful family, they have been the subject to many controversies over the years, but this book gave me a completely different perspective. Never could I have imagined what his family went through, or the incredible struggles and abuse they endured over the years. After reading his story, I felt like I knew him from years ago, I felt as if I had grown up with him, and knew some of the most personal details about his life. I have never really experienced this from someone I don’t really know, especially in jail. It’s like reading someones diary, not in a creepy way, but with them knowing about it. His family’s story exemplifies on the people in this world who vow to break the cycle of abuse and neglect, and on how others choose to perpetrate it. It shows how money and greed are among the worst addictions, with the power to destroy peoples lives. However I learned the true story, a true inspiration of overcoming challenges, persisting in the face of setbacks, and having the determination to transform your life.
How the book will influence your life and prepare for success upon release? Among the many lessons this book has taught me, it has made me reflect on the importance of being a good father. Family is the most valuable asset we have. Our children, our significant others, our parents, our siblings and our loved ones, form a unity tightly bonded by love. I understand it is my responsibility as a father, to love, outlive myself and overcome all the adversities I am faced with for my children. I have the power to cause the greatest positive impact on their lives. Among my many goals, I want to be the best father I can be, by being present, involved and loving them every single day of their lives. Although while in jail I have lost many of significant life events, I want to make up every missed day, minute and second of their live, and show that they have the best father in the world.
What was the most inspiring quote?
“Sometimes you just need to put a piece down and deal with it later. And when you come back to it, you sometimes find that something in your mind clicks, and you see things differently. With each piece, you’re solving a problem but it takes patience and perseverance. When you get stuck, don’t give up. Just move on to something else, and go back to the tough part later with fresh eyes.”
