Book Summary

This book is a beautiful grown-up fairly tale. It is the story of a young girl, Tress, who must leave her whole world behind, a tiny island on the Emerald sea, to rescue the person she loves. Through an incredible journey through the dangerous seas, she must risk her life as a sailor, a pirate, and a dragon slighter to finally discover who she really is and who she is in actuality rescuing.

What inspired you to read the book?

Brandon Sanderson has become one of my favorite fantasy authors. This book is among the first of his new stand alone novel series called “The Secret Project,” that he began secretly working on during the pandemic. To those unfamiliar with Sandorson’s novels, most of his stories occur within the same universe called the “Cosmere,” (similar to how Marvel has its own universe of characters and stories). This book however has become a favorite for me as it is written in the voice of one of my favorite character, who although is never the protagonist, he does manage to travels through time and space and appear in some witty way in most of books.

What you learned from reading the book?

If you were to put together all the great stories of amazing heroes, those who have risked their lives for others or the Davids against Goliath’s of our lifetime who stood with all odds against them, you will always find two interesting patterns. The first is that heroes can be trained. Not by special military or special government training but by themselves. Heroes are the ones who have thought many times about what they are going to do if a particular situation arises, and have trained to do it. Although heroism seems as spontaneous, it is in reality the result of a lifetime of preparations. The most interesting thing is, that if you are to ask any of those heroes why they risked their lives, you will find that none of them did it to for a particular ideal or to win a medal standing on top of a pedestal or even for their country. Constantly time and time again heroes will always attest that they did it for their friends. In this fragile world full of chaos and destruction that we live in if you want to create heroes, don’t give them something to fight for. Give them someone to fight for.

How the book will influence your life and prepare for success upon release?

This book taught me the importance of friendship, of never giving up on ones dreams and to always fight for the person and ideals you love regardless of the obstacles that life presents.

What was the most inspiring quote?

“If bravery is the wind that makes us soar like kites, fear is the string that keeps us from going to far. We need it, but the thing is, our heritage taught us to fear some of the wrong things… And when one abandons certain fears and assumptions, an entire world opens up.” – Hoid
